Students put together ideas for an information system then design a single table database to support it. We consider data types for a range of information then use Microsoft Access as a platform for development. Students learn to validate, sort and filter using our sample data then apply the techniques to their own development. We introduce the use of SELECT SQL to collect records for reports, then finish the tutorial section with the exporting of data into spreadsheets and documents.

To practice the skills learned, we follow up with eight independent database design tasks covering the topics of school, sport, entertainment and populations. These activities offer a wealth of practice in the targetted skills for students of all abilities. The resources include frequent extension tasks for the more able.

The targeted curriculum outcomes were gathered from the new Australian Curriculum V9.0 as well as the new NSW Computing Technology course (2024). The relevant curriculum statements are listed below.

Files: Cover / Checklist / Wordlist / Information systems / Introducing Databases / Designing a Database / Creating the Database / Entering Data / Data Validation / Sorting and Filtering Data / Visual Queries / Query Criteria / Wildcards / Select SQL / Reports / Exporting Data / Skills 1 – School / Skills 2 – Sports / Skills 3 – Entertainment / Skills 4 – Populations

‘Includes all answer sheets and solution databases.
