Networked Information Systems

Students look at the role of hardware and software in digital networks, comparing the operating systems on their phones with other devices. They study the configuration of LANs and WANs, then (if they have access) investigate their home networks. We test some encryption using a spreadsheet and build a database with reports and queries. The final activity is a major project, where students use design thinking to develop an improvement for an information system in the real world. They can look at the software, hardware, security or sustainability and are encouraged to ask the system managers for a critique or to discuss the possibility of actually incorporating their developments.
